The body mass index (BMI) is the most commonly used screening tool for obesity. However, the BMI is a population-based tool with several limitations when applied to individuals. In this thought-provoking session, we will explore the past, present and future role of BMI. By the end of this session, attendees will have practical tools to provide a patient-centered, individualized assessment and treatment of obesity.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the intrinsic limitations of the body mass index in screening for adiposity.
Be able to describe “Healthy Weight” vs “Happy Weight.”
Utilize the components of “Healthy Weight” assessment to individualize metabolic health assessment.
Apply a patient-centered “Happy Weight” assessment to develop a shared decision-making approach to obesity treatment goals.
