This session with review the relationship and underlying mechanisms between obesity and cardiovascular disease with attention to the individual variability between BMI and CV risk. While obesity increases the risk of having a major adverse cardiovascular event, excess adiposity also seems to confer some protective benefits known as the obesity paradox, further complicating the relationship between obesity and CVD. As a result, patient with obesity need a patient-centered approach to managing both CV risk and CVD.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the impact of obesity on incident cardiovascular events and mortality
Describe the “obesity paradox” among individuals with existing cardiovascular disease
Describe the impact of weight loss on cardiovascular outcomes and mortality
Devise individualized approaches to managing cardiovascular risk in persons with obesity
