Dr. Ariana Chao is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Medical Director at the Perelman School of Medicine’s Center for Weight and Eating Disorders, and Director of Enrichment Programs at the Center for Nutritional Science and Medicine. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing (Family Nurse Practitioner) from Boston College. She earned her PhD in nursing science at Yale University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UPenn School of Nursing’s Center for Health Equities.
Her program of research is dedicated to developing innovative treatments for obesity and is focused in three primary areas. The first is the identification of biobehavioral factors and phenotypes associated with obesity and how these may influence obesity treatment. The second is the development of weight management approaches that address social determinants of health and reduce health disparities. The third is the evaluation of novel behavioral and pharmacological approaches to obesity treatment. She has published over 85 articles. Her work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health as well as foundation and industry sponsors.
